Hong Kong Metropolitan University Breaks Ground on New Campus in Northern Metropolis University Town: Community Health Hub
Hong Kong Metropolitan University held a groundbreaking ceremony today (June 9) for its new building on a slope site at the junction of Sheung Shing Street and Fat Kwong Street in Ho Man Tin. The new building will be positioned as a 'Community Health Hub', serving as a teaching and research base to nurture outstanding professionals for Hong Kong and the country, promote interdisciplinary learning, and become an important platform for the university to advance community health education and services.
In addition, the HKSAR government is developing the Northern Metropolis University Town. HKMU President Professor Paul Lam revealed that the university has set up a special committee to study the entry into the Northern Metropolis.
Chief Secretary for Administration Mr. Eric Chan Kwok-ki stated in his speech that the new 'Community Health Hub' will support interdisciplinary nursing and health science education and research, fully aligning with HKMU's strategic development as an applied science university, and further deepening HKMU's close ties with industry to cultivate a new generation of professionals with practical capabilities.
Mr. Chan added that the new campus will be equipped with advanced facilities, including an integrated health center and interdisciplinary research centers. The new campus will also allow more students to receive quality applied education, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to serve society with professional competence, innovative spirit, and empathy in the future.
HKMU Council Chairman Mr. Wong Tin-cheung said that as Hong Kong faces the challenge of an aging population, the new campus will help train more healthcare professionals to meet growing demand, while also providing courses, shared facilities, and services to benefit the general public. He added that the construction project will become a valuable learning platform, allowing students to study real construction data and gain practical experience covering green building, low-carbon construction, building information modeling, and project lifecycle management.
HKMU President Professor Paul Lam stated that the 'Community Health Hub' will be equipped with a modern library and an auditorium capable of accommodating over 600 people, suitable for symphonies, Cantonese opera, and more. For research, the new building will house an integrated health center and multiple interdisciplinary research centers, conducting high-quality research while also opening to the public.
Additionally, the HKSAR government is developing the Northern Metropolis University Town, with the Hung Shui Kiu university town site expected to be tendered soon. When asked whether HKMU intends to enter Hung Shui Kiu, Professor Lam responded that HKMU is very willing to participate. The university has formed a special committee to conduct research, discussing positioning and how to promote innovation and technology development. He emphasized that it will contribute within its capabilities and leverage HKMU's strengths.
